Got Dairy? Don’t miss the 2010 Michigan Dairy Expo July 19-23 at MSU!

The 14th annual Michigan Dairy Expo will be held at the Michigan State University (MSU) Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education July 19-23.

“Visitors to the Michigan Dairy Expo will get to see some of Michigan’s finest dairy cattle exhibited by top breeders from across the state,” says Joe Domecq, MSU Extension dairy youth specialist and expo director. “More than 200 youth will also participate in various educational and leadership activities during the week. These youth represent the future of Michigan’s dairy industry.”

The 4-H youth will competing in a variety of events ranging from showmanship where they compete using their fitting skills paired with how well they can exhibit their animals to quiz bowl as the kids test their dairy knowledge about topics varying from cattle body parts to diseases and the prevention or treatment practices.

“Dairy Expo offers an excellent venue for producers to network with friends and other producers from around the state, in addition to meeting and getting to know some of our future dairy producers and industry leaders through watching various 4-H events,” says Carla McLachlan, expo event coordinator. “It also offers visitors a fun opportunity to see how the modern dairy industry operates and how it’s advancing here in Michigan.”

On Wednesday, the Great Dairy Adventure will be in full swing starting at 9:30.  Great Dairy Adventure is a great opportunity for families, day cares, summer camps, and curious consumers to learn about where their milk and other dairy products come from as well as other interesting facts. Other highlights from Great Dairy Adventure are milking a cow and getting your photo taken with MSU athletes and milk mustaches.

Visiting Michigan Dairy Expo is a great way to support those who help supply the dairy products we enjoy as well as the youth that are participating in contests. It also is a wonderful way to learn a little more about dairy products while having fun at the Great Dairy Adventure.
